Custom Access Platform for V/Line Geelong – Roof Safety Made Simple

Geelong V/Line

The Challenge

V/Line faced a growing safety concern at its Geelong station: how to provide reliable access to rooftop ventilation units for maintenance staff without creating trip hazards or compromising safety. The existing setup offered limited, unsafe access, particularly for maintenance at multiple roof levels. A long-term, compliant solution was needed without significant disruption to station operations.

Our Solution

Workplace Defender (WPD) custom-designed a complete rooftop access system tailored to the unique structure of the station. The solution included:

✅ Prefabricated and factory-tested platform, walkway and ladder system
✅ Hook-on ladder system for accessing the initial roof section
✅ Integrated anchor points for full roof safety compliance
✅ Multi-level access, enabling safe reach to all critical ventilation areas

All components were pre-assembled in our facility, allowing precise quality control and ensuring the system would be installed efficiently on-site.

Why It Worked

The customised system solved multiple issues at once:

Eliminated trip hazards by routing walkways away from congested areas
Improved workflow for maintenance crews across multiple building levels
Reduced risk through certified anchor points and compliant ladder integration
Fast-tracked installation by saving nearly 2 full days on-site, keeping disruption at the station to a minimum

The Outcome

V/Line’s Geelong station now benefits from a tailored access solution that prioritises both safety and efficiency. Staff can carry out maintenance duties confidently, without navigating unsafe pathways or needing special setup for each visit. With minimal operational downtime and a long-term compliance win, this project proves the value of custom, factory-built access systems.
