Improving Campus Safety with Smarter Design and Minimal Downtime

Challenge: Meeting Compliance Standards with Minimal Disruption

Trinity Grammar School, a respected institution known for its commitment to excellence, underwent a routine safety audit and compliance inspection. The audit revealed multiple compliance gaps, particularly regarding roof access and fall prevention systems. Ensuring the safety of maintenance personnel and external contractors while preserving the school’s historic and aesthetic integrity was a key priority.

Solution: Tailored Engineering and Smart Design

Workplace Defender partnered with Trinity Grammar to implement a highly customised solution that addressed their safety concerns while respecting the school’s architectural heritage. The project included:

  • Chapel Roof Access Redesign: An external ladder had previously been installed, but it obstructed the aesthetic of the chapel cross. To resolve this, Workplace Defender designed and installed an internal ladder system, ensuring safer access while maintaining the building’s visual integrity.
  • Complex Internal Engineering: The internal ladder required precise positioning within the chapel’s roof space to maximise head height. Signage and padding were added in areas with lowered clearance to ensure user safety.
  • Sustainable Reuse of Materials: Instead of discarding the original ladder, which was still structurally sound, we reinstalled it at another section of the campus, reducing waste and maximising resources.
  • Addressing Large Campus Safety Upgrades: Given the scale of Trinity Grammar’s campus, the audit report identified numerous modifications needed across different buildings. To align with the school’s budget and operational constraints, Workplace Defender phased installations over school holiday periods, minimising disruption to daily activities.
  • Curved Roof Safety Upgrade: One of the school buildings had a large curved roof where the gradient steepened near the gutters. Previously, a static line was used for access, but these systems require frequent inspections and are one of the least preferred forms of height safety. Workplace Defender replaced the static line with a permanent guardrail system, significantly improving safety while reducing long-term maintenance costs.

Outcome: A Safer, More Efficient Campus

Through innovative design and careful planning, Workplace Defender delivered a safety solution that not only enhanced compliance but also improved long-term efficiency for Trinity Grammar. The key benefits included:

  • Full Compliance: The upgraded systems met all regulatory standards and audit recommendations.
  • Preservation of Architectural Integrity: The internal ladder solution for the chapel ensured that the visual appeal of the historic building was not compromised.
  • Improved Safety & Accessibility: Maintenance staff and external contractors now have safer, more efficient access to rooftops and high-risk areas.
  • Cost Savings: By implementing guardrails instead of static lines, the school reduced ongoing maintenance and compliance costs.

Why Trinity Grammar Chose Workplace Defender

  • Expertise in Complex Engineering Solutions: Our team designed and executed tailored installations that respected both function and form.
  • Smart Safety Decisions: By replacing static lines with a more robust guardrail system, we ensured a long-term, cost-effective safety solution.
  • Minimised Disruption: Our phased installation approach worked around the school’s schedule to prevent interference with academic activities.
  • Sustainability Considerations: Reusing the existing ladder reduced material waste and aligned with environmentally conscious building practices.
