Practical Roof Access Solutions for Difficult Hospital Roof Layouts

An upgraded hospital facility brought together new construction areas, existing buildings, and large amounts of mechanical equipment across a difficult roof layout. The site included multiple steep-pitched roofs running in different directions, limited existing access, and new plant equipment that needed safe ongoing maintenance access.

The access routes needed to connect old and new areas in a way that made day-to-day maintenance practical and efficient.

The challenge

The existing building had almost no usable rooftop access infrastructure in place.

As part of the hospital upgrade, new mechanical systems were installed across several roof zones, but roof access had largely been overlooked during construction planning. Maintenance teams needed to safely move between roof levels, carry refrigerant gas, and work around ductwork and plant equipment on steep, irregular roof surfaces.

The layout created several challenges:

  • Multiple roof pitches running in different directions
  • Existing and new construction needing to be linked together
  • Mechanical equipment spread across disconnected roof zones
  • Limited space around ductwork and services
  • Long and inefficient maintenance routes
  • Difficult material handling between roof areas

What Workplace Defender delivered

We designed and installed an integrated rooftop access system that connected the various roof areas into a safer and more usable maintenance pathway.

The system included:

  • Levelled walkways across uneven roof angles
  • Integrated step ladders over ductwork and services
  • Staircase access between roof levels
  • Defined maintenance access routes to plant equipment
  • Access pathways designed to allow refrigerant gas cylinders and maintenance equipment to be carried safely between areas

Working around a difficult roof layout

One of the biggest technical challenges on the project was the unusual roof design.

The hospital upgrade combined existing buildings with new construction, resulting in several roof sections sitting at different heights and pitches. Some areas were difficult to connect without creating awkward transitions or inefficient access routes.

Instead of forcing standard products into the space, the access system was designed around the realities of the building itself.

Walkways were levelled across changing roof angles, access points were repositioned to reduce unnecessary travel distance, and step systems were integrated around existing services and ductwork to keep routes practical for maintenance teams.

Improving long-term maintenance access

Part of the project involved rerouting maintenance pathways to create shorter and more efficient access routes between plant areas. This reduced unnecessary movement across the roof and made ongoing servicing more practical.

In many buildings, rooftop access is treated as an afterthought during construction. This project highlighted how earlier planning during the construction phase could have created simpler and more cost-effective access pathways from the start.

That is often where independent site assessments and practical design input make the biggest difference. Solving access problems early is usually far simpler than retrofitting systems after mechanical equipment is already installed.

The outcome

The completed system provided the hospital with connected rooftop access across previously difficult and disconnected areas.

Maintenance teams now have:

  • Safer movement between roof zones
  • Defined access pathways around equipment and services
  • Easier transport of maintenance materials
  • Reduced need for awkward transitions across steep roof areas
  • A more practical long-term access solution for ongoing servicing
